First of all, Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, something incredibly not clever about zombie Jesus- no wait that’s Easter. Never mind. So on and so forth. It’s that time of year, like it or not, so yeah. Enjoy it.
What are you doing this year? I’ll be spending most of my energy avoiding my extended family, who are apparently aware that I’m out as a transgendered woman, but haven’t yet taken the time to contact me. They’re content to just talk among themselves. Meanwhile all the people I’d like to spend time with are unavailable or just plain absent. So that’ll be fun.
But I’m not here to complain about Christmas. Though if you want to tell my why yours will suck more than mine, feel free to leave a comment. It’ll make me feel better.
In the meantime, I have a present for you. Yes, for you!
No, sorry, I didn’t mean you, I meant the person standing behind you, reading this over your shoulder- okay they’re gone now. Great. I liked them, too. I guess it’s just you now. Isn’t that nice.
So here’s what I got for you. Are you ready? Close your eyes.
Don’t… don’t actually close your eyes. This is a text post, you won’t know when to open them again. Come on now. Think.
I wrote you a story!
Yeah, I know, how original. That’s kind of all that I do, ever. But whatever, it’s a good one. You’ll like it.
You’ll like it.
It’s a short 4,000 word story (part 1 of 2) that takes place after the events of Morning Star, so if you haven’t read that yet, you should probably do that. Come on, the eBook is like three dollars. IT’S A GOOD BOOK. My mum even said so.
That’s a lie, she didn’t even read it. But you should!
UPDATE: My mother informs me she has now read Morning Star and liked it. So there you have it.
Have you done that? Good. You should also read this, which should offer you a bit of context going forward. Then read this story, which I’m going to make really easy for you to find.
See? Can’t miss it. It’s focusses on Gary, who (because you’ve probably forgotten) was Alex’s best friend/total creep, non-consensually filming Alex engaged in sexual acts and generally just invading her privacy. Now, there was a reason for it, and his actions weren’t entirely his fault. But that’s really all the context you need. Gary’s a dick, or maybe he isn’t. Whatever.
Something I’d like to point out. Alex has just began her transition at this point (don’t worry, it’ll be addressed in detail and from her perspective later on, but this story isn’t about that). Pay attention to what pronouns people use, or don’t use.
Oh and just in case you’re wondering, yes, it still feels gross to misgender her as I write her.
ONE LAST THING.
This I’m super excited about. As a Christmas present, a good friend of mine secretly recorded an audiobook of Morning Star and gave it to me to do with as I please. I’ve listened to it a little bit, and it’s really very good. It sounds professional, which is weird, because it’s mine.
I haven’t quite decided what I’m going to do with it yet. It’s far too good to just give away, so I’m considering selling it. Not for much, but I think audiobooks are really cool, and it’s awesome that I could have one available for one of my books. I’ll keep you updated when I’ve worked out the kinks.
And as I watch you disappear into the ground
My one mistake was that I never let you down
So I’ll waste my time
And I’ll burn my mind
On Miss Nothing
